Ellen Show Taping at Universal CityWalk

Sunday, April 3, 2011

Ellen DeGeneres will be taping two episodes of her show "Ellen" this Sunday, April 3, 2011 at Universal CityWalk. Taping times are at noon and 3pm (times subject to change). The first show's guest is LL Cool J, with a performance by Duran Duran. The second show has Eric Stonestreet of Modern Family and Kelly Clarkson performs. The episodes will air April 5 & 6, 2011.

Tickets for seating at the taping are long gone, but don't let that stop you from being part of the "Riff Raff" on the streets of CityWalk! Aside from parking, it is a free event to watch her tape the show from the sidelines. While you won't be able to see much of her chatting with the guests as an outside looky-loo, you can get close to the bands performing and be part of that crowd. If you are at the parks the day before on Saturday, you just might catch her filming segments throughout the parks.

We attended last year to watch from the sidelines. And if it rains, well, the show must go on. Last year there was the extra fun of a deranged fan that jumped into the lagoon and tried to swim to her stage! Watching the boat patrol fish him out was the most entertaining part!

Event Update:
We stopped by and caught the 3pm tapping on Sunday. The crowd was massive, the sun was brutal but the crowd was energized! We found a spot off to the side where we were able to catch a glimpse of Ellen (she's in the purple shirt & khaki pants). We weren't able to catch much of what was happening on stage, but when they put Eric Stonestreet on The Plank, we had a pretty good view of him falling into the lagoon. You could watch the taping on the giant tv screen in the center of CityWalk as well. Here's a few photos from our perspective that afternoon.

This is just one of the massive semi-trucks from All Mobile Video production company, for the taping.

2011 French Quarter Fridays Review: We made it to the 2nd Friday of the event, eager to see if it would be as awesome as last year. While we personally preferred last year's earlier hours, we understand why they likely changed it (was probably eating away at their dinner crowd). We found the nachos just as highly piled with gooey cheddar cheese and the small army of crawfish has returned to see that every chip got its own tasty mud bug. The Hot Wings were douced in a special sauce of Pat O'Brien's Bloody Mary Mix. Not particularly spicy, but a very unique sauce for wings. We also got the 1/2 Muffelatta Sandwich to-go (hey, we planned ahead for a midnight snack!). We were amazed when we opened the to-go container at home to see a full sandwich inside. Must have been a mistake. But, either way, an excellent sandwich with a ton of meat and garlicy olive tapenade.

Like we said last year, don't miss these great deals for some late night killer bites while at Universal Studios. It's tough to find food of this quality for this price anywhere in Orlando, let alone a theme park.

PTTP's Tip: There is a $7 cover charge after 9pm for the Piano Bar, but not for the Local's Bar or restaurant if you just want to take advantage of these deals.

2010 French Quarter Fridays Review: We finally managed to make it over to Pat's last Friday and was it ever worth it! We settled back with our $2 AmberBocks while we checked out the menu. We decided on the crawfish nachos and the shrimp po'boy sandwich thanks to the bartender's recommendation. The nachos were large, plenty enough for 2 to share. They came piled high with gooey cheddar cheese and a small army of crawfish - don't think I had a chip without one. Plenty of toppings to last down to the last chip. The shrimp po'boy was equally delicious. The fresh, soft bun, was stuffed with plenty of perfectly seasoned grilled shrimp, fresh lettuce, tomatoes and pickles. The sandwich was about the size of your typical 6" sub. The best part - they both were only $5 each! Our grand total after 4 beers, nachos and a sandwich came to a whopping twenty bucks. That's a great deal anywhere and here we are at a fancy bar at a premier theme park! We'll be sure to hit this one more regularly next year.

2010 EVENT REVIEW
We arrived at CityWalk late in the afternoon and found several booths set up and the band jammin'. We naturally stumbled upon the vodka booth first and asked how much for a sample. To our surprise the vendor said they were free! Free thimble-sized samples, but free nonetheless. Rain Organics Vodka had 2 different bottles available - original and cucumber-lime. They both tasted like regular vodka, but the one with a pronounced cucumber flavor that would be a delicious fresh addition to a cool summer cocktail. Let's make one up on the fly; 1 part Rain Cucumber-Lime Vodka, 2 parts lemonade, splash of sprite. I'll call it the Cool-Cumber Lemonade.
The organic beer at the next booth offered free samples of Napa Smith Brewery's Organic IPA and Laverstoke Park Farm's Ale. Napa Smith is a lager with light citrus flavor and mildly hoppy. Laverstoke's ale is a little dark and slightly heavier and more hoppy.
Two wines were also available, Candoni's Merlot and Pinot Grigio. These both were nothing special or out of the ordinary flavor-wise. I'm not a big merlot or pinot grigio fan and these two aren't changing my perception. Flat and boring, just like every other merlot or grigio I've ever had. If you're in the mood for a good red then give your taste buds a treat and try to find a chianti or a zinfandel (not white zinfandel!). And for white, cliche as it is, chardonnay is about as good as it gets - good ones are fruity with hints of oak and vanilla.

Other booths included some organic & vegan foods, Fusion Sushi from CityWalk, Starbucks, Emeril's which had a good sized portion of their jumbalaya for $3, Katie's Candy Company, Honest Tea flavored green teas, local nature parks, the Dyson company showing off the airblade dryers and more.
Overall, it was a fun event to wander through, grab a free drink sample, some food and check out the booths. I wouldn't have made a special trip just to experience this, but if you were already planning on visiting Universal it was a nice extra event.
