2010 Food & Wine Booth Offerings, Prices & Reviews

2010 Food & Wine Event

Booths are in order as you enter the World Showcase from Future World and go to your left (towards Mexico).

  • Concha y Toro Casillero del Diablo Sauvignon Blanc $2.50
  • Santa Ema Reserve Chardonnay $2.75
  • Casa Lapostolle Carmenere $2.50
  • Montes Classic Cabernet Sauvignon $2.50

    Reviews:
11-1: We tried the Beef and Corn Pie tonight and was that ever a pleasant surprise! Lightly seasoned ground beef with raisins and corn mixed in on the bottom with a cornmeal-like topping that was very similar to mashed potatoes. A decently sized amount for the price too. We also had the Carmenere red wine which had a rich, spiced but not too dry flavor, and the Santa Ema Chardonnay which was a very pleasant Chardonnay with a sharp flavor and not too dry. Great wines that we'll get again.

Desserts & Champagne

  • Strawberry Angel Verrine $1.50
  • Pear Streusel Pudding Cake $1.50
  • Dark Chocolate Sensation $1.50
  • Dessert Trio $3.50
  • Moët & Chandon Impérial $4.75
  • Moët & Chandon Rosé Impérial $5.25
  • Moët & Chandon Nectar Impérial $5.00
  • Moët & Chandon Nectar Impérial Rosé $5.75

Brazil

  • Shrimp Stew with Coconut and Lime $4.25
  • Grilled Pork Skewer with Farofa $4.00
  • Leblon Frozen Caipirinha $7.25

    Reviews:
10-17: This round we gave the Grilled Pork Skewer a shot. A small-ish chunk of pork on a stick with a crumbly coating. Maybe it was just our luck, but ours was very dry and tough - almost too tough to eat. It was just a dried-out piece of pork lacking any unique flavoring or spices. We're for sure not giving this one another go. Did you like it? Was it not as tough for you?

10-15: When someone says "stew" to you, how do you picture it being served? In a bowl, right? Their Shrimp Stew is served on a plate and trying not to spill while finding a make-shift table was difficult. The watery broth is served over rice and is unfortunately completely lacking of any flavor of the coconut and lime that was promised. It did come with 4 decent size shrimp but they were 4 of the most boring shrimp I've ever had, and, they were served tail-on, what kind of stew comes with tail-on shrimp? Enjoy your sticky fingers if you get this one. The dull flavors might make this a safe dish for the non-adventurous but if you ask us, skip it.

Puerto Rico

  • Medianoche Sandwich $2.75
  • Asopao de Pollo (Chicken Soup with Rice) $2.50
  • Bacardi Frozen Torched Cherry Colada $7.50
  • Bacardi Frozen Limón Mojito $7.25

    Reviews:
10-15: Medianoche Sandwich is basically a cuban sandwich and is a good size for the price. While not the best cuban sandwich I've ever had, it wasn't bad. I'd get it again if there weren't so many better offerings at F&W. Asopao de Pollo is a simple chicken soup but the inclusion of green olives gives it a fun twist. Simple. Tasty but not the biggest serving of soup. But at $2.50 at F&W, what do you expect? We've had the Bacardi Mojito before, and it's one of the more unique and refreshingly tasty beverages in the showcase. Read our review of the mojito here.

Argentina

  • Grilled Beef Skewer with Chimichurri Sauce and Boniato Purée $4.75
  • Roasted Corn and Cheese Empanada $2.75
  • Pasual Toso Toronte $2.75
  • Bodega Norton Cosecha Tardía $2.50
  • Bodega Norton Reserva Malbec $4.25
  • Kaiken Cabernet $2.75

Mexico

  • Tamal de Pollo (Chicken Tamales with green tomatillo sauce, queso fresco & sour cream) $4.50
  • Taco de Chilorio (Corn tortillas filled with marinated pork Sinaloa-style topped with fresh avocado sauce and red onion) $3.75
  • Esquites (Fresh corn ) $3.75
  • Churro $2.50
  • Dos Equis Beer $4.50
  • Passion Fruit Frozen Margarita 12oz. $7.25
  • Conga Fruit Punch $2.75
  • Wine L.A. Cetto Chardonnay $3.95
  • Wine L.A. Cetto Petite Sirah $3.95

Poland

  • Kielbasa and Potato Pierogies with caramelized onions & sour cream $5.00
  • Golabki (Pork Stuffed Cabbage) $2.75
  • Belvedere Strawberry Balsamic Chiller $8.75

    Reviews:
10-15: We've had the Pierogies here in the past and they're perfectly fine but we won't be getting them again. Five bucks for a couple potato pierogies is nearly robbery! Head to your grocery store and pick up the equally good (and likely equally frozen) pierogies from your local grocery store's freezer section.

China

  • Black Pepper Shrimp with Sichuan Noodles $4.50
  • Pork Pot Stickers $3.50
  • Xinjiang Barbecue Chicken Stick $3.50
  • Carmel Ginger Ice Cream $3.25
  • Dragon's Hollow Chardonnay $3.50
  • Green Tea Plum Wine Cooler $7.00
  • Happy Lychee $7.00
  • Tsing Tao Beer $6.00

    Reviews:
11-12: Words cannot describe the uniqueness of the Green Tea Plum Wine Cooler. Just try it. Trust us. Tsing Tao beer is a smooth lager - not very hoppy and nearly no bitter aftertaste. If you like Bud you'll like this.

10-3: The Black Pepper Shrimp are shrimp with a light tempura breading served on a bed of chilled noodles. This was the tamest black pepper shrimp I've ever tasted. So much so that we couldn't detect a hint of black pepper anywhere! Very bland shrimp, no flavor besides shrimp to be found. The noodles were similarly bland, over-cooked & mushy. Won't be trying this one again.

South Korea - New This Year

  • Barbecue Short Rib with Steamed Rice and Cucumber Kimchi $4.25
  • Lettuce Wraps with Roast Pork and Kimchi Slaw $2.75
  • Bek Se Jeu (Herbed Rice Wine) $3.00
  • Bohae Bokbunjajoo (Black Raspberry Rice Wine) $3.50
  • Jinro Chamisul Soju $5.00
  • Honey Ginger Tea $1.25

    Reviews:
10-17: Barbecue Short Ribs proved themselves to be much better than we were expecting. Decent amount of meat, for a rib, and dripping in a rich, tangy soy-based BBQ sauce makes for a tasty dish. The sour pickled cucumbers make an excellent compliment to this fun food find.

10-3: The Lettuce Wraps, while fun & different to try, didn't have much flavor to offer. Bland is not what I should be describing in South Korean cuisine! Raspberry Rice Wine has a crisp, fresh berry flavor and wasn't too sweet or tart. Herbed Rice Wine has a sharper, grass-like flavor.

Singapore

  • Coconut-Braised, Beef Rendang with Jasmine Rice $3.25
  • Shrimp Cake with Singapore Noodle Salad $3.50
  • Singapore Sling $7.25
  • Tiger Beer $5.00

    Reviews:
10-22: We simply cannot get enough of these new dishes! Oh, and the Sling is still like drinking grain alcohol . . . to us, that's a good thing. Tiger Beer is one of our favorite beers that we first discovered at Food & Wine several years ago that is recently available at most liquor stores too. It's a lighter, smoother, easy to drink beer without a lot of aftertaste. A good compliment to these spicier dishes.

10-15: This is by far our favorite booth of the event so far. These entrees actually have great flavor and are reasonably priced for the portion. We decided we'd better try another (twist our arm) Singapore Sling to see if that first one that tasted like straight-up grain alcohol was a mistake. It wasn't. This probably holds the title for strongest drink in Epcot right now (besides tequila of course). Word to the wise, this drink is for the experienced drinker only.

10-3: Coconut Beef is excellent! We've never combined the flavors of a nice heavy shredded beef with coconut, but somehow it works wonderfully. Our favorite item so far is the Shrimp Cake - it looks like a large scallop on a sugar cane stick and has a unique and fun asian spiced taste.
We also tried the Singapore Sling (not our first sling, of course). We must've gotten the bottom of the drink barrel because after a sip from this tiny cup I could've lit my breath on fire! I'm betting they're not supposed to be this strong so we'll take another for the team and try it again later. But, for $7 for the little cup it better be a worthy drink. For less than that you can get a 20oz. beer.
    20oz. beer vs. Singapore Sling

South Africa

  • Seared Beef Tenderloin with Sweet Potato Purèe $4.75
  • Flavors of Africa (Salad, Bread, and Spreads) $2.75
  • La Capra Sauvignon Blanc $2.75
  • La Capra Chardonnay $2.75
  • La Capra Pinotage $2.75
  • La Capra Shiraz $2.75

    Reviews:
11-12: The La Capra Shiraz is a nice, smooth, red wine that's moderately dry. Goes very well with the Flavors of Africa dish.

10-22: The Flavors of Africa bread, spread and salad sampler is one of the better dishes of the event. Our only complaint is that they give you too much spread and not enough bread! (We asked for an extra piece and scored!). If you've ever dined at Boma at the Animal Kingdom Lodge this will remind you of the offerings there. I'm not particularly up on my typical African ingredients and spices but I'll do my best. The dish includes two thick olive oil based sauces, one green and one an orange-red color. Both sauces have a delicious extra virgin olive oil tang to start with. The flavor of the green sauce is deliciously herbie (basil and parsley? Watercress?) with a slight citrus finish. The orange-red sauce baffles me, I'm thinking there's some sort of ground nut in it, maybe pecans? Both are great - too bad they don't give you an entire loaf of bread with them.

10-15: In a beef kind of mood, I decided to give the Beef Tenderloin a try. I let out a loud 'whoa' when I was handed my plate - the tenderloin and the potato puree was smaller than my clenched fist (couldn't have been more than 3oz) On top of the ridiculously small size, the tenderloin was way over-cooked, a solid well-done (yuck). With the plastic cutlery, it was like trying to cut through a shoe. The sauce drenching the puny piece of beef tasted an awful lot like one of your typical bottled BBQ sauces. Potatoes were boring and offered nothing to the party except to add a bit of moisture to this sad little steak. For $5 I was expecting a little better. The Chardonnay was light, slightly sweet and rather typical.

  • Clausthaler Classic Non-Alcoholic $3.25 / $6.25 / $11.50
  • Brewer's Collection Flight (choice of any three 6 oz. beers) $7.75

    Reviews:
10-22: When we arrived, only 3 beers were available (they were in process of changing kegs) so our selection for this round chose itself.

Märzen - light, simple, very slightly hoppy
Dunkel - dark, slightly nutty and hoppier but not too heavy

Oktoberfest - nearly indistinguishable with the Märzen in flavor and hoppiness
(In order in the photo from left to right.)

Germany

  • Nürnberger Sausage in a Pretzel Roll $4.25
  • Spätzle Gratin with Ham and Cheese $3.75

  • Radeberger Pilsner $6.25 12oz. / $11.50 22oz.
  • Altenmünster Oktoberfest $6.50 12oz. / $11.50 22oz.

    Reviews:
11-12: Germany's Diva Spatlese Riesling is probably my favorite white wine in Epcot. Smooth, sweet and lightly dry. Altenmünster Oktoberfest is a medium-bodied, hoppy beer with a hint of spices. Goes well with the sausage.

Italy

  • Baked Cheese Ravioli, Creamy Bolognese Sauce, Melted Mozzarella $4.50
  • Polpettine Toscane with a Rosemary Breadstick $4.50
  • Cannoli Al Cioccolato $3.50

    Reviews:
10-15: You should know by now how we feel about overpriced pasta. Have you tried any of these? Leave us your comments and we'll include them since we won't be eating here, except for maybe a wine or two
    .

Hops & Barley

  • New England Lobster Roll $7.25
  • Boston-style Crab Cake with Cabbage Slaw and Rémoulade $4.50
  • Pecan Bread Pudding $3.25

Samuel Adams Beer - Small 6oz. / Medium 12oz. / Large 22oz.* (*souvenir stein included, no refills)

  • Boston Lager $2.75 / $5.50 /$11.50
  • Octoberfest $2.75 / $5.25 /$11.50
  • 15th Anniversary Festival Beer Coastal Wheat $2.75 / $5.50 /$11.50
  • Cherry Wheat $2.75 / $5.25 /$11.50
  • Blackberry Witbier $5.25
  • Sam Adams Light $2.75 / $5.50 /$11.50
  • Cream Stout $5.50
  • Latitude 48 IPA $5.00

    Reviews:
10-22: The Crab Cake is another big winner. There is more crab than cake in this thing! You get a good sized patty roughly the size of a hockey puck and lightly pan fried on each side. Light, flaky with fresh crab and perfectly seasoned combine to make one of the best crab cakes I've ever had. We also tried the Pecan Bread Pudding - this is heavenly decadent! About the size of a piece you'd get at a regular restaurant this is also a great value for the price. If you like bread pudding you have to get this one. I could've finished the entire pan and I'm not a dessert person. And a glass of Blackberry Witbier compliments it perfectly. On the other hand, they should be embarassed by the size of the Lobster Roll for $7. The 6" bun had a filling of "lobster salad" that I don't think would fill up a shot glass. Pathetic, skip that.

    Now on to the beer:

Latitude 48 IPA - dark, heavy hops flavor with a strong bitter aftertaste
Oktoberfest - a lager similar to Bud with a slightly hoppy bite and hints of spices
Coastal Wheat - slightly hoppier than the Oktoberfest with a heavier aftertaste
Blackberry Witbier -  smooth, mildly hoppy with a hint of berry flavor

United States

  • Bison Chili with Wild Mushrooms, Cabernet, and Pepper Jack Cheese $3.50
  • Heirloom Tomatoes with Oregon Blue Cheese, Red Onions, and Basil $3.00
  • Red Stag Lemonade by Jim Beam $7.00
  • Sagelands Vineyard Merlot, Four Corners $2.75
  • Sagelands Vineyard Riesling Columbia Valley $2.50

    Reviews:
10-3: Bison Chili just may have taken over the Cheddar Cheese soup as my favorite comfort food here. Nicely spiced, not too overpowering or spicy. A fair mix of beans to beef with a sprinkle of cheese on top. The Heirloom Tomatoes were very fresh and very flavorful. They'll make you wonder what they're doing to the sad red balls of fruit they label as tomatoes at the grocery store to make them so flavorless. Red Stag Lemonade has a light, refreshing yet you can tell you're drinking whisky kind of bite to it.

Japan

  • Spicy Tuna Roll $3.75
  • California Sushi Roll $3.50
  • Tuna Sensation $5.95
  • Wafu Ribettes $4.95
  • Kirin Draft Beer $7.75
  • Hatsumago Junmai sake $7.00
  • Denemon Junmai sake $6.50

    Reviews:
If you consider yourself to be a sushi person, skip this Spicy Tuna Roll. You can find a better roll at your local grocery store than the one they serve here. If you're really craving sushi, go make a reservation for Tokyo Dining where they serve much higher quality sushi. For a larger selection of sake, go inside the Mitsukoshi store to the sake bar. Tuna Sensation consists of a wine glass filled with cut up avocado and raw tuna with a splash of soy sauce. Kirin is a nice, smooth lager with little aftertaste.

Australia

  • Grilled Lamb Chop with Roasted Potato Salad and Red Wine Reduction $5.75
  • Seared Barramundi with Blistered Cherry Tomatoes,Arugula, and Lemon Oil $4.75
  • Lamington (Chocolate-covered Butter Cake) $3.00
  • Rosemount Traminer Riesling $2.50
  • Nugan Estate Riverina Chardonnay $2.50
  • Marquis Philips, Shiraz $3.00
  • Penfolds Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet $2.50

    Reviews:
11-12: We had the Grilled Lamb Chop and was that ever tender! Much to our surprise the meat was cooked perfectly and the red wine reduction went with it nicely. I was not a fan of the very vinegary flavored potato salad, but my husband loved it. Chardonnay was lightly sweet and moderately dry. Nothing special, very average. The Cabernet was a little dry with a deeper, spiced flavor.

Morocco

  • Kefta Pocket (Ground seasoned beef in a pita pocket) $5.00
  • Falafel Pita Pocket $4.75
  • Baklava $3.00
  • Amazigh Red wine $3.95
  • Sangria $4.00
  • Tangerine Mimosa Royal $6.00
  • Casa Beer $5.95
  • Iced Mint Tea $2.50

    Reviews:
    11-12: Casa beer
is similar to an American lager, like Budweiser, but a little hoppier, think of a cross between Budweiser and Heineken and you've got a good idea what Casa is like. If Bud Light is your favorite beer then it's not for you, but, if you like something with a little more bite, give it a try.

10-3: Kefta Pocket is a patty of ground beef in a flour pita. Simple, plain and kinda boring to us. No spices or distinguishable flavors at all. Tangeriene Mimosa Royal is served in a champagne flute with orange juice, very light and refreshing, like a regular mimosa. Rather expensive for the size though.

Belgium - New This Year

  • Steamed Mussels with Roasted Garlic Cream $3.75
  • Freshly Baked Waffles with Berry Compote and Whipped Cream $2.75
  • Stella Artois $3.25 / $6.25 / $11.50
  • Leffe $3.25 / $6.25 / $11.50
  • Hoegaarden $3.25 / $6.25 / $11.50
  • Godiva Chocolate Iced Coffee $7.25

    Reviews:
11-12: Tried the Waffles and they tasted just like a waffle. It's good with the berries and cream, but in the end it was just a waffle that I don't believe is worth all the hype, or the $3, it's been receiving. Stella Artois is one of our favorite beers any time of the year - lightly hoppy yet refreshing. I orded Leffe and received the Leffe Brown Ale which is a dark ale with hints of coffee and cloves. Lots of hoppy flavor with this one. If you are more of a Bud person this is not for you. Hoegaarden lager was also very hoppy but with citrus and fruity hints of flavor that made it more palatable.

Spain

  • Taste of Spain: Serrano Ham, Chorizo, Manchego, Olives, and Tomato Bread $4.25
  • Seared Albacore Tuna with Romesco Sauce $4.00
  • Spanish Almond Cake $2.75
  • Marqués de Cáceres Rioja Crianza Red $3.50
  • Paul Cheneau "Lady of Spain " Cava Brut $2.25
  • Marqués de Cáceres Rioja White $3.50

    Reviews:
10-22: I now know how they planned on serving them - I broke my rule and just took the piece of Tuna they handed me and was that ever a mistake. I'm not sure you could call what I had tuna but more of a dried-out, thick generic white fish. At first I thought that maybe they have to cook it fully for safety reasons but then remembered Japan is selling a dish that is nothing but raw tuna so why can't they cook this correctly? I'm not sure my cat would've liked it (hey, he's picky). When it's cooked properly it's a good but well-done tuna is disgusting. Be sure to ask them to prepare it to your liking or skip it.

10-3: We asked if they could undercook our piece of Seared Albacore Tuna, and they did with no problem. Even with that, it was still a little more cooked than we normally like - I can't imagine how they were planning on serving them. The Romesco sauce, a thick, orange sauce made from olive oil, garlic, almonds and hazelnuts served chilled, complimented the tuna very nicely. Looking forward to that one again. Also had the Red & White wines. White was dry, without any flavors of fruit or oak, a little flat by my standards. Red was smooth, not very dry and easy to drink. We weren't impressed with the wines from Spain last year but this year's red is much better.

France

  • Escargots Persillade en Brioche (Garlic and Parsley Snails in Brioche) $4.75
  • Braised Short Ribs in Cabernet with Mashed Potatoes $4.75
  • Crème Brulée au Chocolate au Lait $3.75
  • Chardonnay, Private Selection, B&G $4.50
  • Merlot, Chateau Des Deux Rives, Bordeaux $5.50
  • Sparkling Pomegranate Kir $6.50
  • Parisien Cosmo Slush: Grey Goose Vodka, Grand Marnier, Cranberry juice $8.50

    Reviews:
11-1: There actually wasn't much of a line tonight, so we finally got to try the Parisien Cosmo Slush. A Cosmopolitan is one of my favorite drinks, and this tasted more like a cherry squishee from 7-11. Not sure why it had such a strong cherry flavor, it was almost like drinking extract. Very disappointed. We also had the Sparkling Pomegranate Kir which was a small amount of champagne with a splash of Pomegranate liquor. A very dry champagne, with a hint of berry. Nice, but not really worth the price.

10-22: We really want to try the Parisien Cosmo Slush to see how it stacks up to it's cousins over at the other drink cart, but this booth always has an ungodly long line every time we're here. I've yet to find a drink worthy of waiting in a 30min+ line - nor will I ever. Event's not over yet though!

Ireland

  • Lobster and Scallop Fisherman's Pie $5.50
  • Kerrygold Cheese Selection $3.50 :
Aged Irish Cheddar, Dubliner & Ivernia cheese with apple chutney and brown bread
  • Warm Chocolate Lava Cake with Baileys Irish Cream Ganache $2.75
  • Bunratty Honey Meade Wine $4.25
  • Guinness Draught 12oz. $6.25

    Reviews:
11-1: We have another winner here! The Lobster and Scallop Fisherman's Pie is a comfort food delight! Creamy, cheesy mashed potatoes with bits and chunks of lobster and scallop mixed throughout. One of the larger portions of food for the price too makes this one of the best deals at the event. I could've easily sat down to 4 bowls and made a dinner of this, but we had more to try. We both had the Bunratty Honey Meade Wine which was a deliciously sweet wine with a strong honey flavor. Didn't go well with the pie, but was nice afterwards as a dessert wine.

Canada

  • Canadian Cheddar Cheese Soup $3.75
  • Maple-Glazed Salmon with Lentil Salad $4.50
  • Chicken Chipotle Sausage with Sweet Corn Polenta $3.75
  • Nanaimo Bar $2.75
  • Inniskillin Vidal Icewine $5.75
  • Chateau De Charmes Riesling $3.00
  • St. David's Bench Vineyard Merlot $3.75
  • Moosehead Beer $6.25

    Reviews:

10-22: I love that Cheddar Cheese Soup, but I swear the portion keeps shrinking every year. I'm waiting for the year that they simply hand you a spoon. Do yourself (and your wallet) a favor and buy the Cooking with Mickey and the Disney Chefs book and make it at home. It's not difficult, and tastes just like you're in Le Cellier. The Inniskillin Vidal Icewine is perfect for the lover of very sweet wines. I recommend saving it until you've finished your food. It's a dessert wine and isn't meant to be paired with foods. Enjoy it
as an after-dinner cordial, the way it's meant to be enjoyed. Moosehead is a hoppy lager with a rather bitter aftertaste.

Charcuterie & Cheese - New, kind of. Different kind of cheese dishes than the Cheese stand last year.

  • Nueske's Charcuterie Plate: Applewood Smoked Beef; Duck; and Ham $3.75
  • Cheese Fondue with Croutons and Roasted Potatoes $3.00
  • MARTINI Prosecco $3.75
  • MacMurray Ranch Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir $3.50
  • Ace Joker Hard Cider $6.25

    Reviews:
10-22: Forgot to mention the Ace Joker Hard Cider. This is the smoothest cider I've ever had (and I love ciders). No strong tart or bitter aftertaste. Almost like a good apple juice, but not as sweet with the slightest sour tones. These go down easy and quick in the heat.

10-3: We liked last years offerings of large slices of a selection of cheeses better. The Fondue was nothing special, a bland white cheddar that started to turn thick & hard towards the end, served with a few tiny potatoes and cubes of bread. The Charcuterie Plate is a nice selection of meats for the price (2 good sized slices of each, along with 2 small pieces of bread and 2 little pickles). Here's a fun tip with this plate: we made mini sandwiches! If you do make a mini sandwich, it's in desperate need of some mayo or mustard, which you can find at the neighboring Refreshment Port!

2011 Food & Wine Booth Offerings, Prices & Reviews

©DisneyMarketplace booth order begins at World Showcase entrance, headed toward Mexico & ending in Canada. Click on graphic for a large event map. Reviews & photos coming soon!

AUSTRALIA

  • Shrimp on the Barbie with Pepper Berry Citrus Glaze - $4.50
  • Grilled Lamb Chop with Potato-Goat Cheese Salad and Shiraz Reduction - $5.75
  • Lamington (Chocolate and Coconut covered Yellow Cake) - $3
  • Penfolds “Koonunga Hill” Chardonnay - $2.50
  • Greg Norman Estates Shiraz, Limestone coast - $3.25
  • Lindeman’s “Bin 90” Moscato - $2.50
  • Penfolds “Thomas Hyland” Cabernet Sauvignon - $3

Review 10/9: We took a trip down under and tried the Shrimp on the Barbie with Pepper Berry Citrus Glaze. The 5 shrimp were cooked nicely and served on a skewer. The glaze is a light citrus flavor, nothing overpowering or particularly interesting, but good. We also tried the Grilled Lamb Chop with Potato-Goat Cheese Salad. While the Chop had a nice sear on the outside, it was cooked way too well-done to be good. However, that's something that may change depending the chef. Try to get a peak at someone else's before ordering. The Potato-Goat Cheese Salad was nearly inedible unless you enjoy drinking straight red wine vinegar. The dressing was so intense we couldn't enjoy the goat cheese & potatoes, let alone taste them. This simply must have been a mistake. To wash down this mediocre snack we shared a Shiraz, which was also a disappointment. A very bland, boring Shiraz that should be skipped.

BRAZIL

  • Brazil’s National Dish - Feijoada (a Black Bean and Pork Stew) - $2.75

CARIBBEAN ISLANDS - NEW

  • Ropa Vieja (slowly braised beef) with white rice - $3.50
  • Jerk spiced Chicken Drumstick with mango salsa - $3.25
  • Frozen Rock Coconut Mojito - $7.50
  • Frozen Dragon Berry Colada - $7.25

Review 10/9: We've had some delicious Ropa Vieja at several Cuban restauants in town, so we were eager to see how well Epcot could pull it off. Yet again, Disney has toned down the flavor to satisfy the masses (and in turn please no one). The beef was cooked nicely, not tough or chewy, but was lacking any of the flavors and spices that it should have. To top it all off, the rice was terribly undercooked (which might have just been our bad luck).

MEXICO

  • Rib Eye Tacos - $5.50
  • Shrimp Tacos - $3.75
  • Flan - $3
  • Dos Equis Beer - $8.25 12oz.
  • Lime Strawberry Margarita on the Rocks - $7.75

  • L.A. Cetto Petite Sirah - $4

SCANDINAVIA - NEW

  • Taste of Scandinavia - Shrimp Salad, Cured Salmon and Herring - $4
  • Swedish Meatballs with Lingon Berries - $3.50
  • Rice Pudding with Driscoll's Berries - $2.75
  • Xante Sunshine Cocktail - made with Xante pear and Cognac liquor - $7.25
  • Xante - $5.75
  • Carlsberg - $6.25 12oz.

Review 10/9: We both have Norse blood running through our veins, so we figured we had to give the Taste of Scandinavia a try. This takes the award for the most unique and adventurous plate at the event. The Shrimp Salad consisted of small shrimp in a mayo-style salad. Tasty after you get over the initial "wow that's fishy" bite. That reaction only intensifies as you take a bite into the pickled Herring. Like biting into a raw fish that had been sitting out in the sun all day. That is for hard-core Scandinavians only. This was our first pickled Herring, and will be the last. The salmon was nice, like a typical cured salmon you find served at parties. It's presented with 2 crackers, which is not nearly enough to finish the plate.

Review 10/1: Hello Xante. Where have you been all my life? Xante is a cognac with pear and spicy vanilla flavors. Remember that when you order it - you are drinking cognac on the rocks (well, a couple melty ice cubes anyway). If only served in a snifter you could walk around the World Showcase feeling fancy. If you like any liquor straight up, give this a try. If you prefer it mixed, you're in luck. The Xante Sunshine Cocktail is the same great cognac mixed with lemon juice, lime juice and elderflower. Not quite as strong, but just as tasty. This cocktail version is better suited for your average drinking enthusiast. Great bang for your buck, but watch their pours. We received half of a wine glass, which is about what we expected. We've seen some patrons get barely an ounce in their cup. For $5.75 they can pour it to at least half.

  • Myung Jak Bokbunjajoo (New Raspberry Wine) - $3.75
  • Charm Soon Soju (New) - $5
  • BEK SE JU (Herbal Rice Wine) - $3.25

SOUTH AFRICA

  • Seared Filet of Beef with smashed sweet potatoes and Braai Sauce - $5
  • Bunny Chow (Vegetable Curry served in a Bread Loaf) - $3.25
  • La Capra Chardonnay - $2.75
  • La Capra Sauvignon Blanc - $2.75
  • La Capra Pinotage - $2.75
  • La Capra Shiraz - $2.75

Review 10/1: We tried the Bunny Chow (which has just the right amount of bunnies...just kidding). The Bunny Chow consists of veggies & potatoes cut up in a little crispy bread bowl. Ours was cold, not sure if it was supposed to be. The curry is rather bland and the bread bowl we received seemed like it'd been sitting out all day - very hard. Not good enough to give it another try. Maybe if it had bunnies it'd be better.

  • Selbach-Oster Estate Spatlese - $4.50
  • Selbach JH Riesling Kabinett - $4.50
  • Selbach JH Riesling QbA - $2.75
  • Selbach JH Riesling classic - $3
  • Radeberger Pilsner - $6.25 12oz.
  • Altenmünster Dunkel - $6.25 12oz.

Review 10/9: The Goulash is a hearty, simple, warm-your-belly kind of comfort food, like your mom used to make...if she was German (or from the midwest!). The meat was perfectly cooked and could be cut with a spoon. We got an even serving of meat, veggies and potatoes that was warm, though it could've been hotter. Pairs nicely with both Radeberger and Altenmünster beers.

POLAND

  • Kielbasa and Potato Pierogie with Caramelized Onions and Sour Cream - $5
  • Golabki (Pork Stuffed Cabbage) - $2.75

  • Placido Pinot Grigio - $4.50
  • Birra Moretti - $6 12oz.

FIFE & DRUM

  • Frozen Red Stag Lemonade by Jim Beam - $6.50

Review 10/9: We've found the "Worst Drink at Food & Wine" winner. I am disgusted that I paid $6.50 for what tasted no different than a 7-11 cherry slushie in a 6oz. cup! No hint of Jim Beam. We really liked the Red Stag Lemonade from last year, but that was a mixed drink, not frozen. Our purchase of this drink will not be wasted if we can prevent one person from ordering this.

HOPS AND BARLEY

  • Linda Bean’s Lobster Claw Cuddler with drawn butter - $6.50

  • Shrimp Cake on a Sugarcane Skewer with Singapore Noodles - $3.50
  • Beef Rendang (a coconut braised beef) with Jasmine Rice - $3.25
  • Singapore Sling - $7.25
  • Tiger Beer - $5.50 11.2oz.

Review 10/1: This was our favorite booth last year and we're happy to report that the dishes are just as excellent as last year, except that the portion of the Beef Rendang is significantly smaller for the same price. Savory shredded beef with rather pronounced flavors of coconut that is spicy - actually spicy. For the Shimp Cake, think of a crab cake but with the consistency & texture of grilled shrimp. A very delicious & unique item. If you tried the Singapore Sling last year and was wondering if they tamed it down - don't! It's just as potent as last year. Considering it's $7.25 it better be worth it, and it is. (See the photo below for the Sling vs. a 20oz. beer for size comparison) This booth is for the more adventurous, advanced foodie.

  • Crème Brûlée au Chocolat au Lait - $3.95
  • Chardonnay, Bouchard Aîné & Fils - $4.50
  • Merlot, Chateau de Beauregard-Ducourt, Bordeaux - $5.50
  • Sparkling Pomegranate Kir - $6.50
  • Parisian Cosmo Slush (Ciroc Vodka, Grand Marnier, cranberry juice) - $8.50

Review 10/9: The Coq au Vin is a nice, simple, satisfying, "comfort food" that should please pretty much everyone. The chicken was cooked perfectly and the mushroooms and onions made for nice accompaniments. The sauce could've used a bit more red wine to really make that flavor pop. It's one of the better sized plates for your money too.

We enjoyed the Sparkling Pomegranate Kir as well. It's a rather dry champagne with a lightly sweet yet tangy flavor of PAMA liquor. A decent deal considering the $12+ glasses of Moet over at the Dessert & Champage booth.

IRELAND

  • Lobster & Scallop Fisherman’s Pie - $5.75
  • Kerrygold Cheese Selection: (Aged-Irish Cheddar, Dubliner and Ivernia Cheese) with Apple Chutney and Brown Bread - $3.50
  • Warm Chocolate Lava Cake with Baileys Ganache - $3
  • Guinness Draught - $6.25 12oz.
  • Bunratty Honey Meade Wine - $4.75

Review 10/9: On of our "do not miss" drinks of the festival is the Bunratty Honey Meade Wine. It's similar to a moderately dry white wine but gold in color with the flavor of sweet honey that's very noticeable, but not too overpowering. It makes for a great after dinner wine or dessert wine. The Honey Meade pairs pretty well with the cheese platter, but stick with a Guinness for the Fisherman's Pie.

TERRA – NEW!
Culinary Offerings:

  • Trick'n Chick'n Curry with Basmati Rice featuring Gardein Chick'n Breast - $3.75
  • Chili Colorado with House Made Chips & Cashew Cheese, featuring Gardein Beefless Tips - $3.75
  • Chocolate Cake with Passion Fruit Sorbet and Coconut Foam - $2.75

Beverage Selections:

  • Paul Dolan Sauvignon Blanc - $4.25
  • Paul Dolan Pinot Nior - $4.25
  • Silk Berry Smoothie - $3.75

Review 9-29-12: We at PTTP are big time meat lovers, so we were intriqued to see how this not-chicken-but-tastes-like-chicken would rate. To our surprise, the Trick'n Chick'n comes thisclose to passing as actual chicken. The texture, color and consistnecy is nearly exact - but there is that something that reminds you this is not actual meat. The dish could've used more curry flavoring, but otherwise it's decent. However, the Chili Colorado is a tofu-based chili that hits you with a disturbing mouth feel when you are expecting to taste a regular chili. If you are a tofu person you'll likely enjoy it. The chips are delicious, and the cashew cheese did not particularly stand out as anything special. The Pinot Noir is a typical moderately dry Pinot, nothing worth writing home about. The Silk Berry Smoothie was the stand out hit for us - smooth, creamy and delicious!

CARIBBEAN

Culinary Offerings:

  • Ropa Vieja with Cilantro Rice - $3.50
  • Jerk Spiced Chicken Drumstick with Mango Chutney - $3.25

Beverage Selections:

  • Bacardi Frozen Dragon Berry Colada - $7.75 (in souvenir cup $12.75)
  • Bacardi Torched Cherry Frozen Cherry Limeade - $7.75 (in souvenir cup $12.75)

Review 10-21-12: The Bacardi Frozen Dragon Berry Colada is a sweet drink with a light tartness that makes it a little more interesting than your typical frozen drink. The flavors are rather mild and it's not winning the strongest drink at the event award, so it's a nice light drink with a slightly unique flavor that will be enjoyed by many.

  • Iron Horse Fairytale Cuvee - $8.75
  • Xanté - $6
  • Xanté Sunshine - $7.50

Review 10-10-12: We were big fans of the Xante & Xante Sunshine last year, and still love it this year! The Xante is a cognac with pear and spicy vanilla flavors. A strong drink that might not be for everyone. Order the Xante Sunshine to get the cognac mixed with some fruit juices for a sweeter, lighter to drink, (yet strong), cocktail. The pours also are a bit larger than last year, and the price only went up by a quarter. Good deal!

Beverage Selections:

  • Bohae Black Raspberry Wine-Bokbunjajoo - $4
  • Jinro Chamisul Soju Fruit Slushy - $7.50
  • Jinro Chamisul Soju - $6.50

Review 10-10-12: The Lettuce Wrap with Pork, while very small, is tasty with a decent mix of flavors and sauces. Not amazing, but the best option here. The Mung Bean Pancake with Shrimp is a very odd item. A dry, cake-y item with a very heavy sesame oil flavor with random chunks of little shrimp stuck in it. The intense sesame oil flavor overpowers whatever other flavors might be in there, and is unedible. We like weird foods and flavors, but this is just bad. The review doesn't get much better with the drinks. The Bohae Black Raspberry Wine is like drinking an intoxicated raspberry. You better really like raspberrys to finish this bitter fruity wine. The Jinro Chamisul Soju Fruit Slushy is a complete waste of money - it's a cup of blended ice with the slightest hint of orange flavor, let alone alcohol.

SOUTH AFRICA

  • Spinach and Paneer Cheese Pocket - $3.25

Beverage Selections:

  • Beer Flight #1 - Four 6oz. Pours - $12 (Radeberger Pilsner, Schofferhofer Grapefruit, Hovels, Berliner Kindl Dark)
  • Beer Flight #2 - Four 6oz. Pours - $12 (Scion Kolsch, Altenmunster Oktoberfest, Schofferhofer Weizen, Altenmunster Dunkel)

Review 10-1-12: The Berliner Kindl Dark - while dark in color, strikes out in dark flavor. If you're jonesin' for a good dark brew, this will not satisfy that craving. Rather simple in flavor, with a light hint of caramel and very little bitter aftertaste. Not a bad beer, just not what we were expecting. Even a dark beer hater could polish this one off without any fuss.

The Sion Kölsch is another simple, mildly flavored and lightly hoppy beer. Easy to drink and cold - would make for a good after-mowin'-lawn beer.

Review 10-21-12: We finally got to try the Schöfferhofer Grapefruit beer (it's been out every other time we've stopped!) This unique brew is currently only available in the United States right here at Epcot! If you've ever had any of the other "fruity flavored" beers on the market, this is very similar in style. It's a light lager with moderate to mild hoppiness but kicks you right in the tastebuds with an intense grapefruit punch. If fruity beers are not your thing, skip this one, as this is not just a hint of flavor. If you enjoy a unique beer, this is right up your alley! (P.S. It is not the best accompaniment with funky cheeses.)

  • Sterling Vintner's Collection Pinot Noir - $3.50
  • Sterling Vintner's Collection Meritage - $2.50

Review 10-1-12: Ah, yes. Our favorite country "Cheese" has returned. Someday we'd like to visit that land. Anyway, onto the Trio of Artisan Cheeses review. The Trio includes a honey-drizzled Cheddar, Brie with berries and Bleu with a small toasted piece of bread. We are big-time cheese lovers and could see nothing wrong with making a meal out of some fine cheeses. We really enjoyed the Bleu, which has a moderately "funky" intensity. Not the strongest out there, but it can hold its own. The Cheddar is a medium/mild flavored cheddar that goes nicely with the addition of the honey. The Brie is the biggest let down. This one has almost zero flavor. The blandest Brie we've ever had. Even the berries couldn't save this cheese. Not the best value at the event either - the pieces are very small. For a better value, head over to Ireland for their Cheese Samper where you'll get much larger pieces, and in our opinion, better cheeses.

POLAND

Culinary Offerings:

  • Kielbasa & Potato Pierogie with Caramelized Onions and Sour Cream - $5
  • Zapiekanki-Toasted Mushroom, Caramelized Onion and Cheese Bread with House Made Ketchup - $3

Beverage Selections:

  • Chandon Carneros Chardonnay - $4.50
  • Tyskie - $6
  • Belvedere Frozen Lemon Apple "Tea" - $8.50

Review 10-1-12: The Zapiekanki (try saying that after a few glasses of wine!) is a big piece of fresh, soft bread with a pile of mushrooms, onions and cheese over it with a small drizzle of their homemade ketchup. Almost like a piece of pizza, Zapiekanki must be Polish for "comfort food" because that's what this is: ooey, gooey, cheesey simple snack. A good one for that picky eater in your group as this is seriously lacking much interesting flavor or spices of any kind. You can tell that the ketchup is homemade as it tastes a bit blander than Heinz. Even with that, it could've used a bigger drizzle of it as it got dry towards the end. A safe bet here, and you definitely get your moneys worth with this item - it's big.

To wash that down, we got a Belvedere Frozen Lemon Apple "Tea". This is another drink that joins the ranks of our favorite Sling down at Singapore. This frozen treat is packing a pretty decent punch - our cups began to freeze up on the outside quickly - and you should know what that means by now (it's strong!). Basically a lemonade slush, this is a great choice while walking around in the outrageous Florida humidity these past few days. Since it's not overpowering in flavor, it goes with just about any dish nicely. Go ahead, get one. It's so good you just might forget that you paid $8.50 for about 4oz.

Beer Flight - Four 6oz. Pours - $10 (Sam Adams Boston Lager, Sam Adams Seasonal, Sam Adams Cherry Wheat, 17th Anniversary Festival Beer - Chocolate Bock)

Review 10-21-12: We decided we needed a dessert, and what better way to have it than in liquid form - the 17th Anniversary Festival Beer - Sam Adams Chocolate Bock. This beer while rich in dark brown color, isn't very dark in flavor. It's more of a moderately dark beer with a pronounced chocolate flavor throughout. If you were looking to enjoy a dark beer, this isn't going to be it. Even the non-dark beer drinker in your group will like this one, as long as they love chocolate!

FLORIDA LOCAL – NEW!

  • Florida Beer Company Key West Southernmost Wheat - 6oz. $3  |  12oz. $5.50  |  22oz. $12
  • Florida Orange Grove Key Limen - $2.75
  • Florida Orange Grove Hurricane Class 5, Florida White Sangria - $3.25

Review 10-21-12: The Florida Orange Grove Key Limen wine is very much like you took a mild, lightly sweet Chardonnay and added Rose's Lime Juice to it. This white wine packs a lot of lime flavor, but it tastes artifical. It would actually taste better as a cocktail with some vodka and Sprite. The Florida Orange Grove Hurricane Class 5 White Sangria isn't having us run to Home Depot for 2x4s. Sorry, but if you put "Hurricane" in your drink name it had better pack a mean punch. The Sangria has a dominate mango flavor and is lightly sweet and not dry at all. Both wines are fine, but we were expecting more given the names. Oh, and don't even get us started on the food items that are supposed to represent Florida - Arepa?? Ceviche?? What about gator or grouper?

  • Don't miss the regular beer cart in Canada - they are serving 3 kinds of Unibroue during Food & Wine only! Choose from Blonde de Chambly, Ephemere or Trois Pistoles - $8.50

Review 9-29-12: If you've never had the pleasure of a bowl of Le Cellier's Cheddar Cheese Soup, you have been depriving yourself! One of the all-time best dishes of the event (though it seems the bowl shrinks a little bit every year). Creamy, with a heavy bacon and cheese flavor. We are pleased to see the Wild Mushroom Filet Mignon on the menu this year, but were concerned about how it would be cooked since we prefer our steaks medium-rare. You don't get an option of how you'd like it cooked at the booth. Ours was closer to the well-done side of the spectrum. Even nearly cooked to death, the steak, since it's a filet, was still incredibly tender and delicious. The addition of the mushrooms and truffle butter sauce makes this a savory, must-eat bite at Food & Wine. We washed down our food with an Apple Ice Wine which is
a very sweet wine with a cidery-apple hint to it makes this one of the better ice wines we've tried. Smooth, and satisfying and not too overpoweringly sweet like some ice wines can be. The Mission Hill Family Estate Syrah is a savory, but not too dry wine with a hint of spice in the flavor. A perfect complement to the rich steak and soup. (Sorry for the lousy photo, but it was dark and we couldn't wait to dig in! The steak might have a rather undesirable presentation, but it's delicious.)

  • Kona Brewing Company Pipeline Porter - 6oz. $3  |  12oz. $5.50  |  22oz. $12

Review 10-21-12: The Seven Tiki Mai Tai is fruity, sweet and a bit tart. Not the most authentic Mai Tai, but it's refreshing and delicious. It's more fruity than the usual savory, almond-y richness. Still, a tasty beverage to complement your Hawaiian Pork Slider.

We attended this "Special Experience" on Oct. 9, 2010, and here's our Review:
Long story short, $45 for a couple of cordials (3 1oz. shot glasses (not your standard 1.5oz. shot glass), 1 50ml mini-bottle and a 4oz. mimosa) and a snack over an hour and fifteen minute presentation on the history of Grand Marnier while you sit with strangers at a table for six doesn't cut it. This price range demands a much more comprehensive, high-end experience. This is more than enough for a nice dinner at any of the pavilions' main restaurants; we highly suggest spending your time and money at any of them (even Nine Dragons!) instead.

So, after reading the polite PR spiel are you wondering what we really thought? This was the worst, most over-priced liquor related event PTTP has ever had the displeasure of attending. We were upset with value from this amount of liquor in a single $13 HHN specialty drink; how do you think we feel about it for $45?! If you do the math that's $10/shot and $5 for a single crepe. You've been warned - don't waste your money. But for the pseudo-aficionado I'm sure this event still offers some sort of entertainment. If that's you, enjoy. For the real connoisseur, I'll see you in the tequila bar. And no, not the equally over-priced tequila "tasting", the real bar. Skip these tourist-trap F&W gimmicks.
