Review:
The show consists of two tall towers (think scaffolding) with several drummers inside. While the performers are excellent at what they do, the whole show is just a bit odd. What we do like about it is that it's some sort of entertainment that you don't have to wait in line for. If they happen to be playing while you are nearby, wander over for a few minutes to check it out...just don't plan your night around it.

Bill & Ted's Excellent Halloween Adventure 2011

Review:
This cult fan favorite live-action comedy/dance show returns staring Bill & Ted as they rely on pop-culture icons over the past year to save them from whatever trouble they have gotten themselves into this time - which is the basic theme every year. This is a crass, loud and adult themed show, so if you are lacking a sense of humor, this isn't for you - but for the rest of us it's a don't miss, simply because it's not HHN if you don't see it. Speaking of loud, they have clearly turned down the volume this year, likely because of the new apartments behind the park.

CAUTION - CONTAINS SPOILERS:
The pop culture icons they chose to include this year are strange. We expected Charlie Sheen would have a big part, but he didn't, just a small role at the end. The girls from SuckerPunch? Really? Did anyone actually see that? The writing and jokes fall flat this year as we found ourselves getting bored with only a couple laughs.

The highlight is the pumped-up dance routines throughout the show and at the end. The actors do a great job with what they're given so thanks to them.

Nightingales Blood Prey

This house just keeps getting better! The scene with the soldier shooting at us was spot on tonight and really caught us off-guard for a great scare. Lots of Nightingales coming out of nowhere that got us screaming! Love the detail of the dirt & bumps on the floor to make it seem like you are actually in the trenches.

This house has only gotten stronger since our last visit. The scareactors are really going for the gore here, and it's working very well. There's a spot where one of the Nightingales flies over you that we missed last time. Be sure to keep looking all around in here - you never know where they're coming from!

9-24 - opening weekend.
This house is an early favorite. With amazing detail and unique scares, this is looking to be one of the strong front-runners of the event. Be sure to look up towards the end. The detail of the war setting is excellent, the trenches feel real, and don't miss the horse. 

Winter's Night - The Haunting of Hawthorn Cemetery

This house is quickly becoming one of their best. The scareactors were spot-on tonight with excellent misdirection and out-of-nowhere scares. The "ghost" in the graveyard escaping his grave was very grabby tonight, along with the scareactors in the shrubbery tunnel - they almost actually got me! The pace and intensity of the house stays strong right up to the ending cemetery scene.

Cold, snowy and haunted by ghosts. More of your typical haunted house style here - you'll be scared by ghouls, ghosts and the like. Pretty good scares in here. We see this house only getting stronger throughout the event. 

The InBetween

Having been through this one a few times now, you'd think we'd be prepared for the scares, but thanks to the disorienting 3D effects, they keep surprising us. The scareactors were really in the game tonight too with stellar scares.

9-24 - opening weekend.
A real 3D house - they hand you glasses before you enter. The lighting effects really play with your mind and seem like they are coming from all over. The 3D effects work very well in this house, and it's hard to see scareactors until they are right in front of you. Lots of sudden, startle scares because of that. The laser room is amazing - red & green laser lights bouncing and reflecting off every surface and you can't tell where you are supposed to go. We went through with no one in front of us and didn't know where to go for most of the house - it was a bit too dark. Very cool, and a definite repeat.

Unfortunately for us, the trees have grown significantly larger over the year and are doing a darn fine job of blocking views of these houses. Here's a few pics to try to get a glimpse of what's going on. In the first picture it almost looks like they're building an entrance area to the house. That would be excellent if they add themeing on to the houses before you even get inside (like Howl-O-Scream does for most.)

 

The Thing

We were rather skeptical with this house since we were not fans of the last The Thing: Assimilation from a few years back. Thankfully this one is nothing like the old Thing house, this one's actually scary! It follows the storyline of the new movie which is scheduled to be released on October 14. Lots of misdirection and scareactors coming from places you wouldn't expect. The Thing itself looks it was one of the actual movie props because of the detail...and size. Most importantly, the energy in this house keeps going because there aren't many "dead" spots where nothing is going on. 

The Forsaken

9-24 - opening weekend.
The detail put into this house rivals any movie set - and that's just going from what you can see in the dark! The wind, water and cold really make you feel like you're sailing out on a very unforgiving and angry ocean. The scareactors have glowing green eyes, so unfortunately the scare is ruined as soon as you spot that. Be sure to watch your step in this house. This is the first where you actually walk up a platform and across a narrow, bridge-like feature. We can see people easily tripping over this. While the detail is amazing, the scares just weren't there on this visit. Hopefully we'll soon report differently.

Nevermore: The Madness of Poe

The house was brighter than last time and we could see much more of the detail - but also where the scareactors were coming from. While we only went through twice, the scares & energy of the house seemed to fall flat. We caught the scares we missed last time, but unfortunately we only found out we didn't actually miss anything.

Another amazingly immersive house where Poe takes you deep into his maddness. If you are familiar with his works you will get more out of the house, but even if you don't, you will still get some good scares. This night the house was way too dark, and we missed several scare scenes, so a more thourough review to come soon.

Entertaining as always tonight. Not necessarily the scariest, but still the most entertaining. Well, some people found it terribly scary - we saw one girl crouch down into a ball on the ground and start crying - she was at least 16. Like we said, entertaining.

Still our favorite scarezone! We live streamed from this scarezone last night on Ustream.com. Gluttony temptress at the end of the night is by far the best and we kinda feel bad for Envy temptress - she never has anyone watching her! And yes, it's a bit strip-clubby in this zone at the end of the night once their vices have taken over.

This is already one of our favorite scarezones. The Temptresses are amazingly entertaining, and only more as the night goes on! They each have a couple guys that match their vice wandering the crowd and scaring you while you watch the Temptress. The music is a big part of the scene and this is just an entertaining zone to hang out in for a while. A big photo-op area too. Wondering what that slow song is that's playing? It's just a slowed down, creepy version of Marilyn Manson's The Beautiful People, which you will also hear as the regular version in the scarezone as well. 

9-18
Seven small stages have been set up along Hollywood Blvd. Each sports the number 7 and some type of chair. Each is themed around one of the 7 sins (Greed, Sloth, Envy, Lust, Wrath, Gluttony, Pride). As we learned from the tweet-up last week, these temptresses will start out attractive but as the night progresses, they will actually transform as their sin takes them over. For example, Greed temptress will be adorned with lots of jewelry at the begining, but at the end the jewelry will get larger, weighing her down. Should be interesting as it's going to change throughout the night. It's such a large, wide street we're not sure how scary it'll be, but should be entertaining at least.
       

Your Luck Has Run Out Scarezone

So did they write the description for this scarezone with another one in mind? Nothing in the official description matches this terrible zone. You don't make any choices to make it out alive; the only deadly wrath is a horribly loud scream that sounds like an animal being run over; and what victim?
Here's a few changes that would make this area much better:
• Have Lady Luck actually talk & improvise conversation with us instead of just screaming or standing there looking sexy.
• I know we're not the only ones that were hoping this would be an interactive, dare I say, stage show-like zone. The wheel is already right in the scarezone - have her select a "victim" to put on the wheel & spin him...like in the commercial.

This area needs some help asap, and fortunately they still have time to improve it. Hopefully they do because, as it stands, it's just lame and you can't help but feel bad for the actors. 

9-24 - opening weekend.
This is opening weekend, so hopefully Lady Luck finds what she's supposed to do here. Seeing her smiling, snarling from the patios at us isn't very scary. It seems like no one really knows what they're supposed to do with this zone. Hopefully the scareactors "find themselves" before the event ends. Sometimes the ones that start weak end up strong, so time will tell. We had our hopes up that this would be a more interactive scarezone where she picks out a "victim" and puts him on the wheel - like in the commercials.

Oops! We had her scarezone misplaced! It's actually located in what is known as Sting Alley, the short walkway through the buildings, directly across from the arcade. There's lots of boxes, red drapes and houses of cards set up around the street. Under the red sheets we spied some pinstriped material and a shoe...is there someone underneath there? There were barriers set up preventing anyone from going down the street, so this is the best we could see.
   

Grown Evil Scarezone

"Enter, if you dare, into our garden where evil grows. Nature has taken this once well manicured santuary back from the humans who once kept it. Now the creatures that inhabit the garden are making any human that enters their prey!" - Universal Orlando Official Description

Located in the tree-lined pathway from Mel's Dine-In to the Toon area, across from Garden of Allah Villas.

This one bothers me that it's not scarier than it is. There's so much detail and potential here, but it's just mediocre. It's not for the lack of scareactors trying - but just how scary is an owl? I think part of the problem is that most of the animals in this area don't make any noise. They just jump out and flutter around you.

Still good & foggy, and the scareactors are trying to interact more. Heck, at this rate this will finally be a successful scarezone on the last day of the event!

The garden was much darker tonight with a lot more fog. The scareactors must have channeled their inner owl (or crow) because they were much more involved and dedicated to their role tonight. Still not that scary of a zone, but it's getting there.

9-24 - opening weekend.
A well-themed area that just isn't very scary yet. The scareactors need to figure out how to scare in this area and it could be very good. Darker and more fog would help too.

Lots of detail has been added to this spooky garden. Bats, creepy sculptures, and gargoyles have arrived. We noticed an industrial fan positioned next to the fog machine. It's going to be a windy garden!

Two garden trellises have been errected at each entrance to this scarezone. Quite a few planters have been placed with long grass and dead trees in them. Also a few smoke machines scattered throughout.

The House Doesn't Win With Playing Card Merchandise
When we first heard that HHN was expanding their merchandise to include new items such as playing cards, we were thrilled. That was an item that we were hoping for ever since the theme of 21 was released. With that said, we are very sorry to report that the cards are extremely disappointing to the level that you should save your money and skip them.

The cards have the HHN 21 logo & card art on the backs, which is fine. The disappointing part is the artwork on the other side. These are just the generic playing cards you can find with the regular Universal logo on them. They missed a huge opportunity here to make these truly unique and collectable. Why isn't there original art for the face cards? Queen of Hearts obviously should've been Lady Luck. The suites, numbers and face cards could all have been themed specifically to the event. We're disapointed in you HHN. A great idea that was poorly executed.

We forgot to mention it earlier, but we are disappointed with the entry area to the event. No decorations beside the video screen and a couple banners on each side. Obviously all the money went into the incredibly detailed houses because the rest of the park is bare.

Hopes have been squashed. The stage was gone today. Guess that means no stage show yet again. Will be posting some photos tonight, but we really hope they aren't done decorating the front entrance of the park. It's sparse. But they have added all those pumpkins from the scarezone last year into the trees around the toon area. That'll be a nice decoration as we go to & from the houses back there.

Here's where we always get our hopes up - seeing the stage set up here. We know it's for the Rock The Universe concerts that will be going on next weekend, but will they keep it there for a potential HHN stage show? We can only hope.

More accent lighting has been added along the pathway in front of the Fear Factor stage.

Some little touches have started around the park. Lights have been put up in the tree-covered walkway where they have had the pumpkin decoartions up previous years.

Also, along the sidewalk by Twister leading up to the bathrooms, the lights in the ceiling now have orange plastic over them.
 

Canyon of Dark Souls Scarezone

Located on the street between Animal Actors and The Simpsons ride.

Good & foggy again. We like how there's one "creature" standing still...ominously right in the middle of the zone. It was actually so foggy we couldn't see where we were going at one point which provided a big startle scare from a creature.

Much more fog which provided much better scares tonight too! They are using those hiding places to their full potential and really got us good a few times. Be sure to go through once it's very dark out or you won't see it at its full potential.

9-24 - opening weekend.
There's potential here because of the hiding places, but the zone is too short. The costumes are huge and overwhelming when they look down at you. Unfortunately, right now the area is too well-lit and you can easily see straight through it. Darker, foggier please. The fire is a nice touch, but the zone is over before you know it.

Giant skeleton heads and more drapes have been added to the zone. There's some great built-in spots here for scareactors to hide...

We've got skeleton parts now decorating the towers at each end of the scarezone. They're covered up by the black material for now. They've also added flamethrowers at the tops of the towers. No new development with the long black pieces in the middle.

More scaffolding is up down the street in this area as well. You'll notice a tall tower at both entrances to this zone. Each tower has a ladder and a platform inside. You'll likely find a performer at each of them during HHN. Maybe a form of carnival barker? Maybe a soldier warning you to stay away from the upcoming danger? We'll see. Inside the long pieces of scaffolding that form the walls, we spied a long, narrow raised platform and peculiar metal poles sticking up. Looks like there will be scareactors lining the tops of these walls - possibly another swing from wall to wall type of scare zone with the strange poles acting as anchors for the rigging. All of the flags that are usually up here look like they'll remain down through the season for this scare zone.

Nightmaze Scarezone

"Journey through the ever changing maze of darkness! This all black maze wil morph and change as you walk through it! You will not be scared the same way twice!" - Universal Orlando Official Description

Oh boy. We're starting to think this one looked better on paper. It's just not working...yet. Holding out hope because we like the idea.

9-24 - opening weekend.
This looks like it has a lot of potential to get good. A little too bright when we went through. In order for this to really work it needs to be dark. Really dark. Liked the strange circle costume - whatever that is, it works. We're afraid that this scarezone looked good on paper, but just isn't going to execute well.

Not too much new to see here. Scaffolding has been wrapped in black fabric & there are numbered markers on the ground for the holes.

Some scaffolding with ligting has been added between the two front & back towers.

Lots of activity in this scarezone. Upon inspection, we noticed that these black "walls" will swing out and anchor into drilled holes in the pavement making a "T" shape that will interlock with walls that will swing out from the sides to create tight, maze-like corridors; always good for scaring! We're happy we're finally seeing a small, intimate area to walk through - much scarier than a big, wide-open area (cough, New York, cough).

Acid Assault Scarezone

"For decades now the city has been degrading from the effects of acid rain that still falls today. Those that have lived and survived the blistering decay are all alone in the city. Survivors have stripped the city of all life to sustain their own...dare to enter the Acid Assult!" - Universal Orlando Official Description

While it wasn't much darker here for the projections, the scareactors are getting their game on. They're invading your personal space and using each other for some good misdirection scares. 

9-24 - opening weekend.
The projections are very cool, but they need to turn off a few lights in the area to make the effect work. (Starting to notice a "make it darker" trend so far?) You can still see the real building during & after the "building" crumbles. Just a few tweaks & it'll pop. It's best viewed from a long ways away though, which makes the Macy's building the most difficult to really see. By the time you get far enough away, there are trees in front of it. Worst area so far regarding scareactors. I think we saw 3 in this area and they weren't really scaring people, but more just wandering around looking hurt. Like we said, this was opening weekend, so we expect there to be lots of changes & improvements in weeks to come.

A few new touches of detail since our last update. There is a big decal on the ground by the taxi that makes the pavement look like it's been broken up. Neat, simple effect. Wonder how well you'll be able to see it at night?

There has been a lot happening over here! Great attention to detail and this zone is much larger than it has been in the past. It stretches from the Macy's building, around the corner to the Library facade, and down the street to Twister. We also noticed that at the tops of the tall towers there are 2 boxes each with 2 projectors inside them. Could this be used as a 3-D effect? Or some sort of layering/transitional projection?



Over by the Library there are two large speaker boxes tucked off to the sides.


Across from Macy's they've put a school bus and taxi next to the tower.

One large piece of scaffolding is up where the fake bus stop usually sits. (Come to think of it, the bus stop is actually real. I mean, you could just walk right up and touch it. We should have specified, the real bus stop for the fake bus.) The scaffolding houses a large platform and a ladder for access.

Usually the "humor" house only gets better during the course of the event. This one proved that theory wrong. The few scares there were only got predictable as the layout was nearly identical with each scene. The saving grace of this house was the Easter scene with the gory bunny and the grass man. No matter what you think of the house, we bet you'll never look at a Thanksgiving turkey the same way again!

9-24 - opening weekend.
Another great comedy house in this location! We love the movie preview that explains the story behind the house. (So why don't other houses have this? Soundstages we're looking at you.) A lot of funny gross stuff and some very "unique" yet disturbing props. Some good scares here as well. We can't wait to see how this house develops. You will never forget the Thanksgiving scene...

Nothing new to see here, and we had time to inspect as we were stuck taking refuge here during a torrential downpour. They have added some new blue lights in the queue and in the big white dome lights in front of the attraction.

Other sites have reported that the queue no longer goes inside the building, we can confirm that as of 8-20, the queue DOES still go into the main building. Unfortunately, nothing new from our previous photos. (Photo taken right after queue was let into the attraction.)

Work continues, and on this visit we noticed more of the carved wooden wall accents and the "Christmas room" has even more decorations than last visit. Remember the possibly bloody Christmas tree we spied last time? It was gone, in fact, there was nothing to see on the far side of the building.

Lots of activity happening here since our last visit. We could see some themeing starting inside the house. In the first photo below, you can see it coming together; a wood frame on the wall which has intricate carving on it. In the second photo below, the arrow is pointing at what appear to be some Christmas presents placed along a wall inside the house. The naked eye does a much better job seeing through the mesh screen than the camera - if you can make out the bright green, that's a teddy bear. At the far end of the queue we got a good look at a christmas tree, fully decorated with tinsel, and . . . is that blood? But we were unable to snag a photo of that end; look for it next weekend.

We assumed the construction of the house was finished, but we were surprised when we stopped by Saturday and saw that the house had been built out further, towards the railing.

The back of the main queue is blocked off by lots of green tarp, but that tarp doesn't cover very well and leaves big areas to see the house. It looks like the full house is done being built, at least from our angle. Maybe it's just us but the house looks larger than the one in here last year. We noticed a few smaller door entrances - for someone to pop out and scare you or to switch out scareactors?

For those of you not familiar, the plane is not likely (and not usually) related to the house. It's there year round as part of the Earthquake queue.

Saws N' Steam: Into The Machine

Didn't think it was possible, but they've turned it up a notch in this house. It seems that every intense effect has been turned up to 11. More scares, more water sprays, more electricity. Simply awesome. We don't want to give too much away with this house right now. You need to experience it for yourself.

Wow. This house has raised the bar for HHN. Amazing, immersive detail mixed with a strong storyline makes this quite possibly the best house they have ever done. Terrifying, gory and disturbing greets you around every corner. The energy and fear this house provokes keeps your adrenaline pumping right to the end. There are some top-notch special effects in here that look so real you may forget it's fake. The scares in here are some of the best we've ever experienced. 

Congratulations Universal.

Wow - check it out - the queue is ready. (haha) Yeah, that's all to report here.

Nothing new from the tarp hole to report. If you go inside the queue for the ride and look off to the right where the house is being built you can see some lighting & other construction. Unfortunately it's way too dark in there to get any decent photos and nothing that we could see of particular interest. We had a chat with a team member at the entrance and they said it will be the Saws & Steam house. True or are they just trying to throw us off? We'll see.

So, that large hole in the tarp that all photos have been taken through? It's now been covered up with another layer of the black tarp. We could still see the air compressor sitting where we last saw it through the new tarp. (see photo below)

We got a photo of the large air compressor this visit, but nothing else new to see.

The only new thing we saw through the slit in the fabric this visit was a large air compressor. Too dark tonight for any photos.

No news to report from this weekend.

While the exterior looked the same, we could see some construction going on inside through the giant slit in the fabric from the queue. We saw some pipes with green paint on the ends and a bunch of wood. Nothing too specific just yet.

Nothing new to report. All looks the same as last visit outside. Jaws ride was closed today as well, so we were unable to go through the queue.

Construction has begun as the queue room is now fully closed up with black tarps over all windows and doors. It's hard to see in the photo, but through the cut in the fabric you can see walls up. The wishing well that was near the entrance of the house last year is now out in front of the queue area. Is it going to be used as a prop again or did they just add it as a permanent decoration? We'll see soon enough.
